Well, this isn’t what I had in mind when I planned on writing about fashion/style today. But I have to share this.
A friend posted a link to this shirt on Facebook this morning, and then I started seeing it all over the interwebs.
I don’t think I would be as annoyed by this if it didn’t say “so my brother has to do it for me”. It’s ok for a girl to say she is too pretty for homework, so a boy has to do it for her? I don’t think so.
What were you thinking, J.C. Penney? Didn’t you know this would cause a stir? Or perhaps that’s why you did it. Free advertising. Though I don’t think this is really the kind of notoriety you want.
Read on below for J.C. Penney’s statement.
thedailywhat:

Simpsons Did It of the Day: Earlier today, J. C. Penney was making money off a long-sleeve shirt marketed to girls aged 7 to 16, which proudly announced to the world that its female wearer was too busy being pretty and listening to Justin Bieber to do homework like a boy.
After the Internet got involved, however, J.C. Penney quickly pulled the offending apparel and apologized with this statement:

J.C. Penney is committed to being America’s destination for great style and great value for the whole family. We agree that the “Too pretty” t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect.

The outrage, however, hasn’t been as quick to die down, with disgruntled JC Penney patrons continuing to take to the retailer’s Facebook page to express their dismay.

Exfoliate For Less

Fall is coming. Time to shed that summer skin.

Instead of buying an expensive exfoliator, why not make your own?

Cost: Free! (Since you probably already have these in your kitchen)

What you need:

  • Olive Oil - virgin, extra virgin…it doesn’t really matter. Though if you have really sensitive skin, you may want to consider testing this before using it all over
  • Kosher or Sea Salt - whatever you have in the kitchen!

Pour the oil into your hand

Then pour salt on top

If, like me, you used too much salt, add more oil.

Then rub in a circular motion. I usually just use this on my face, but if I get too much out, like today, I will use it all over.

Et voila. A cheap alternative to those expensive exfoliators.

If you have extra oily skin, this probably isn’t the best idea for you. You could simply add the salt to your current face or body wash for a similar effect.

Po’ Girl Enchiladas

Cost: Approximately $7 for all ingredients (may vary by brand choice)

Time: Approximately 5 minutes

What you need:

  • One can of chili - I used Hormel No Beans. You could make your own chili, I suppose, but I’m going for quick & simple here. So canned chili it is.
  • Shredded cheese - I went with plain Kraft Cheddar Cheese, but you can use whatever you want
  • Flour tortillas - I chose plain Great Value tortillas, as they were the cheapest. But you could use ones made with whole wheat if you feel the need to be healthy.

Heat the chili. You could use the microwave if you are really scrimped on time, but I just poured the chili into a small pan and heated it on low.

Put a tortilla on a microwavable plate.

Sprinkle cheese all over the tortilla.

Microwave the tortilla for thirty seconds or so. The cheese doesn’t have to melt fully, since the chili will be warm and finish the process.

Make sure the chili is hot enough for you, then drizzle it all over the tortilla.

Roll the tortilla up. Then drizzle more chili on top.

Sprinkle cheese along the enchilada.

Stick in microwave for about twenty seconds…

And now it’s time to eat!!

And that’s it. Simple, quick, and cheap.

Enjoy!

What’s Coming Up

I started this blog on a whim.

Now it’s time to decide what I’m going to do with it!

This weekend I’m working on a schedule for The Thrifty Writer. Possible topics?

  • Recipes - Quick, easy, and most importantly, cheap
  • Home - Decorating on a tiny budget
  • Health & beauty - when to save and when to splurge
  • Style & fashion - how to dress for less

Basically, this blog is a place for me to share what I’m learning as I try to live on a lot less.

Along with anything else that I deem fun or interesting. It is my blog, after all ;)
